Re: Supermarkets in Popular Music
There's this from the Wings song "Junior's Farm": "I took my bag into a grocer's store/the price is higher than the time before/old man asked me why is it more" Also, a punk band from New Jersey called Adrenalin O.D. put out a song in 1988 called "My Mother Can't Drive"...

Re: Defunct grocery chains you personally shopped at
I've updated my initial post to include the following: Mars (Baltimore area) Stop-n-Shop (Cleveland area) BI-LO (South Carolina) Mars was an interesting chain. I remember the big blue plastic bags that were suitable for reuse As noted slightly up thread, the Stop-n-Shops in the Cleveland area were a...

Re: Short-lived grocery stores
Thorofare came to the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area in the early 80s. They lasted a year or so. Interesting side note: over a decade later, I bought a box of Thorofare tall kitchen trash bags at Big Lots in Cincinnati. I wonder how long they had been sitting in a warehouse before Big Lots got th...

Re: What are some of the reasons why supermarket history is so interesting?
All of the foregoing posts, especially the OP's, offer great answers to the thread title question. For me, being interested in history in general led to my having a mild to moderate interest in supermarket history. But what really pushed my interest into overdrive was having a daughter with not only...

Re: Defunct grocery chains you personally shopped at
I have edited my original post in this thread to add the following: Grand Union (New Monmouth, New Jersey area) A few years ago, some folks listed Grand Union as defunct on the basis it wasn't the same company after the C&S purchase. My response at the time was that I considered that a judgment ...

Items you bought at defunct supermarket chains that you still possess
Unless the chain in question closed very recently, I wouldn't expect anyone to list any food items. Here's one I can recall at the moment: A good quality manual can opener I bought at a location of the Cincinnati-based Thriftway chain in the late 80's or early 90's. It set me back 5 or 6 bucks. It s...

Re: Defunct grocery chains you personally shopped at
I've added Dominick's (suburban Chicago) to my initial post. The one and only time I was in Dominick's was in 2007. The store seemed pretty busy. The produce looked good and was nicely displayed. Other than that, I don't remember much about it as we didn't spend much time there--just went in to pick...

Re: Defunct grocery chains you personally shopped at
I've added the following to my initial post, all of which I shopped at in the Cincinnati, Ohio area: Marsh Marsh Hometown Market MainStreet Market All of these were various banners of Marsh, which regrettably went out of business recently. The sale to Sun Capital was a really bad idea in the long ru...

Re: If you could bring a defunct store back.....
I would bring Liberal back. They had a rather significant presence here in Cincinnati, including a large store near the University of Cincinnati. I'd like to bring them back for a couple of reasons: (1) I never set foot in one, unless it was when I was too young to remember, and (2) Their name--it w...

Ones you browsed in without buying are OK as well. Memory exercises like this are not only fun but remind me of places I've traveled in the past. Also, any lists serve to shed some light on supermarket history. My List: -Albers (Portsmouth, Ohio) -Schwegmann (New Orleans) -Canal Villere (New Orlean...

Re: Mystery store: 4033 Rhodes Ave, Portsmouth (New Boston), OH
IGA Foodliners often used a ranch design, not unlike this. The pylon/chimney, I'm less sure about. The Pennyfare chain (part of Thorofare) used a ranch design, but this looks a little small for them. Portsmouth would have been in Kroger & Big Bear territory and neither used designs like these. ...

Greater Cincinnati Supermarkets In 1966
I'm reading a book titled Vas You Ever In Zinzinnati? A Personal Portrait Of Cincinnati, which came out in 1966. In addition to a history of the area author Dick Perry covers numerous aspects of then-current Cincinnati life. On page 255, he gives a list of Greater Cincinnati supermarkets. as follows...
